Nurses disciplined after taping resident's mouth shut Print E-mail

Two nurses of Glen Haven Manor, a nursing home in Nova Scotia, have been disciplined after taping a resident's mouth closed.

The two received 5 and 10 day suspensions, but the home would not indicate whether they would still be employed at the Manor.

The incident went unreported for several days, despite several staffers being aware of it.  These staffers were also disciplined but no details were given as to the nature of the discipline.

The nurses had used non-sticky medical tape in an attempt to pacify the resident.  In an attempt at humour, they also drew a smile on the tape.  Both nurses are said to now realize this is was a form of elder abuse.
