The Ontario Nurses Association (ONA), which represents the province's front-line registered nurses, on Wednesday gave a presentation to the standing committee on Bill 140, also known as the Long Term Care Homes Act. The association made the case that any new legislation to improve the quality of nursing home care must also deal with improving staffing levels.
ONA President Linda Haslam-Stroud, herself a registered nurse, noted that nurses in many facilities face a horrendous workload. In some facilities, she said, one nurse is responsible for 200 or more residents.
Legislating minimum staffing standards would not only improve the quality of care and safety in homes, but would also attract nurses to a career in this sector of health care, she said.
