Police probe suspicious nursing home death Print E-mail

A 65 year old resident at Manitoulin Lodge nursing home in Gore Bay was found outside in subzero weather after leaving the building for a cigarette break.  He was given first aid on site and then taken to a hospital, where he died a day later.

Police are treating the death as suspicious and the investigation as "high profile", but have not released the cause of death pending the outcome of an autopsy.

The man had gone outside with two other residents for a cigarette.  The two then re-entered the building without him.  Nursing home staff say he was then found "sometime after the established smoking period."   The temperature for the area on November 16, the date of the incident, was -16 degrees Celsius.
