I just need a few days to myself to gather my strength. What can I do? Print E-mail

Q. I just need a few days to myself to gather my strength but there is no one available to look after my spouse.  What can I do?

A: You have three choices open to you.  The first is to get on-site or home respite care. That would mean that someone would come into your home and help you look after your spouse, perhaps by taking over the grooming responsibilities or to just sit with your spouse while you have time to yourself.

The second option is an Adult Day Centre where your spouse can go and join in activities with other seniors.  The programs may last all day or just be for the morning or afternoon.  The seniors are supervised and the programs are geared towards seniors who need 24-hour supervision

The third option is a short-stay in a long-term care facility.  There is a charge of $32.37 per day for the bed and that is higher than the normal rate.  This option can be used for a total of 90 days per year.  In order to use this program or to get in-home help, you will need to contact your local Community Care Access Centre
