Q: When is it time to consider a long term care solution?
A: There is no correct answer to this question. Several things have to be taken into account. Do you worry that your senior is no longer safe on their own? Are they in danger of falling? Do they forget to take their medications or sometimes take too much medication? Do they smoke in bed and sometimes fall asleep? Do they have trouble recognizing you or where they live? Have they experienced extreme weight loss or dehydration? Have they wandered off and become lost? Is their personal hygiene becoming a problem that youre unable to deal with?
Are you the sole care-giver or the primary care-giver? Are you experiencing signs of depression? Are you able to sleep without interruptions? Are you experiencing weight loss? Do you have health problems that you are not attending to? Do you have any time to yourself? Are you feeling exhausted? Is your loved one experiencing mood changes and/or violent outbursts?
All of the above are signs that you might need to consider long term care for your senior or apply for additional help in the home if youre the primary caregiver.
